What Is Achilles Tendinitis
- inflammation of the thick cord of tissue that connect bones to muscles (tendons) is referred to as tendinitis. When left untreated, prolonged periods of inflammation causes scar tissue build up and is then classified as tendinosis.
Causes
- Trauma
- Over-use of the affected limb
- Improper stretching/strengthening techniques
- Biomechanical abnormalities (i.e. flat feet)
- Improper footwear (i.e. heels)
Symptoms
- Pain
- Swelling
When To Visit A Foot Specialist
- If home treatment such as icing and rest does not alleviate symptoms, it's time to see a foot specialist.
-When left untreated, tendinitis can become a chronic injury (tendinosis) which is a lot harder to treat in comparison to an acute injury (tendinitis)
What Can I Expect During The Visit
- Physical examination of the lower limbs.
- X-rays / MRI
- Shoe inserts
- Orthotics
- Foot immobilization
- Prescription of topical / oral medications to ease pain and swelling.
Prevention
- Stretching / Strengthening exercises
- Custom orthotics to control foot motion
- Gradual build-up of activity level
